Rio Grande Valley Regional Chili & Salsa Cook Off!
Our Mission Statement.
Our mission in producing the Rio Grande Valley regional Chili and Salsa cook off is to develop this event into one of the top regional Cooking contests in North America. This event is sanctioned by the International Chili Society (ICS) which is located in San Juan Capistrano, CA.
This contests success accomplishes three major goals. The ICS will not sanction an event unless a charity is named to receive all profits after expenses of production are paid. We have named “Teach the Children” as our charity for 2004. This charity is solely administered by Clear Channel Broadcasting Channel 5 out of Weslaco, TX.
Number one---as you can see this event provides our community with monetary support for a worthy cause. Number two---this contest will bring business to our island at the start of a slow time of the year. This event will be held on May 1st, 2004. This is after the spring break and holy week. The next time our island is filled with business will be the 4th of July weekend in 2004. The 4th falls on a Sunday this year. Our cooking event will fill our hotels, restaurants and our fine entertainment establishments. This is not to mention all of the other water sports and fishing tours we have available to those that would enjoy these types of activities. Number three---is we will be known throughout the world of chiliheads as having one of the finest sanctioned contests in North America.
To accomplish this goal will take four to five years. To be considered one of the best organized contests and be thought of as one of the largest we will have to draw at a minimum of 90 teams to our island. In teams alone we will have approximately 360 people involved with a cooking teams. This contest should draw 1,200 people, the general populace from the local area at a minimum. This is also a fine family oriented event.
There are local radio stations in our area that will provide very good entertainment. This entertainment will be a level that will draw a crowd to our island on it's own.
In summary we will have a fun filled family oriented event on our island, there will be business and we will help a community charitable organization. I can't think of a more fun way to accomplish all of our goals.
To achieve these goals we will have to have the support of the business community in the area. An ICS event draws many contestants because the winner of an ICS regional or state level event wins not only a very generous cash prize but they win a guaranteed seat in the world competition which is usually held in Reno, NV. on the first weekend of October. If our local businesses can get as enthused about this event as our committee and support this contest then there is no reason why we will not accomplish or mission.
Thank you.
